Sassy Slap

Isn’t it funny how things work themselves out! I have been trying to decide where to take this one and this morning it “slapped” me in the face…pun intended! One of the things I like is to be given a cocktail name and then have to come up with what it is. It’s a lot of fun to see where my mind takes things. So, when Linda, aka Dragon Lady, assigned me a “Sassy Slap” I went in a thousand directions at once with no real idea where I wanted to take it.

I was in Las Vegas for a conference this past week and making a Sassy Slap was the last thing on my mind. well don’t you know, our personal plans are not always what the world has in store for us.

I stepped onto the elevator and went downstairs to get a cup of coffee. Uneventful right….Well as I went to go back up, the elevator was quite full. We stopped on a floor and an older lady and her even more elderly mother were front and center. The mother starts to run off the elevator as fast as her little old lady legs could take her. Her daughter, probably in her mid sixties, called her back….”Mom this isn’t our floor! ” Then it happened!

The lady gets back on the elevator and explains to her daughter in a boisterous voice with a very thick British accent…

“Ooooh myyyy. I would have went to the room and tried getting in. The people in there would think I was being fresh and sassy, and probably slap me!.”

I almost lost it!

She inspired me as she had in her hand a cup of hot tea that was quite obviously spiked heavily!

Sassy Slap: In a cup of hot tea add 1 tablespoon of honey 1/2 oz Ginger SweetShine 1/4 oz Black Walnut SweetShine

1 oz or so Whiskey, your favorite will do

This is a play on a hot toddie, so you could enjoy anytime, but would be quite beneficial if you have a head cold, sinus issues, or need an excuse when getting off the elevator on the wrong floor of a hotel!

This week I’m headed back to Las Vegas, making a road trip with my mother, in a van for another show. Stay tuned, as quite the adventure awaits I’m sure…

My mind works in weird ways when coming up with some of these! Setting: Close to midnight, sitting by the fire with a cup of coffee, watching Pawn Stars on TV.
My phone goes off with an incoming text message. “Who the hell is texting me this late?” It’s the Dragon Lady! (Our endearing term for Linda, the owner) “Great, what does she want this late at night?” (She is at a conference out of town.)

Dragon Lady: “Quick, What is a Conjugal Seizure? I need it now.” Me: “What are you talking about?” Dragon Lady: “A cocktail recipe.”

Me: madly Googling to find what she is talking about with no results.

Me: “I can’t find it.” Dragon Lady: “I know–Make it up!”

Phone rings, the Dragon Lady is calling…ugh… Me: “Who is your audience?”

Dragon Lady: “middle aged guy who doesn’t drink, make it good! Sweet and sassy, and one that will sneak up on ya.” Me: “Ok, Bye” Hang Up!

Me: mind going crazy, need a cocktail that packs a punch but doesn’t taste like it does…

Text Message…Me:

  • A Conjugal Seizure
    • 2 parts cognac
    • 1 part Peach SweetShine®
    • 1 part Raspberry Lemon SweetShine®
    • squeeze of an orange wedge
    • toss it in the glass and garnish with a cherry
    • splash with club soda if he’s a wuss

    Dragon Lady: “Ok, wow…”
    10 minutes pass… Text Message… Dragon Lady: “OMG that was awesome and he LOVES it!” Me: “Good.” Dragon Lady: “How did you come up with that?” Me: “Don’t underestimate my abilities!” Dragon Lady: “I don’t, that’s why I hired you!” Dragon Lady :”☺”

    End of conversation. Until the following week when she asked me to make a Sassy Slap…

Hello CELLO Fans!

Are you a little amazed at our new look? We’re hoping you’re as excited as we are about it! Our CELLO label worked so well at the Distillery, we loved the look, but as we’re moving toward a national presence, we’ve found that our CELLO label wasn’t as effective as it could be on the liquor store shelves. So for the past few months, we’ve been working diligently on rebranding our product.

So without further adieu, drum roll please, here it is: Bloomery SweetShine!

As you know, we pretty much put four ingredients into our SweetShine. Our 190° proof neutral based spirit, sugar, water and a fruit, root or nut for the flavor. Just like the Old Timers did during Prohibition.

Did you know: In 1800, there were more than 14,000 distillers in America, some of them producing only a barrel a year. By 1909, their numbers had been reduced to about 600. Then Prohibition hit in 1920. After its end in 1933, a dozen or fewer distilleries were left standing. Of course, those were the official statistics, which don’t include the citizenry’s rich and colorful history of making moonshine. And in our tiny hamlet of Bloomery, WV more illegal ‘shine came through this area than in any other area of the state! We’re excited to embrace those roots.

So CELLO fans, you’ll be happy to know that our new playful vintage look, through a collaboration with internationally award-winning artist Marty Blake, is out and will be available to our loyal CELLO fans at an unveiling at the Distillery on Saturday, May 11. We hope you’ll join us.

Rain knocking the fun outta summer? Come to the happiest place on earth and join us Friday, June 14, for the return of Eric & Kate Avey to the Distillery. This awesome musical couple plays bluegrass, folk, jam band and more on standup bass, guitar, and a variety of other instruments. Expect tasteful originals, thoughtful covers, and rich vocal harmonies. These guys are back by popular demand! On Saturday, June 15, CassiRaye will perform Indie Folk-Jazz originals. Accompanied by guitarist extraordinaire Jimmy Cherry, CassiRaye’s voice will startle and move you.  Both shows are not to be missed. Music starts at six both nights. Like the tastings, the music is free. As is the laughter.

Join our next door neighbors Laura and Hugo at Mountain View Polo, 261 Falcon Ridge, the road just past our driveway, as one of four featured farms for this year’s Farm Day, 2013.  View the thoroughbreds, watch a polo game and then stop on over to the Distillery to quench your thirst. Farm Day is always fun, educational and entertaining!

River & Trail Outfitters has teamed up with Bloomery Plantation Distillery, crafting a fun, festive and flavorful day where participants paddle the mellow, wilderness-surrounded Shenandoah River and then tour our distillery and taste a variety of our farm-fresh cocktail liqueurs.

The splash and spirit day kicks off with a guided 3-to-7-mile mellow kayak or canoe tour – depending on water levels – down the winding tree-lined Shenandoah River. Nestled in lush wilderness of the picturesque Shenandoah Valley, the river is encircled by the sprawling Blue Ridge Mountains. Deer, otters and beaver are often spotted along and beyond the shoreline, while there are plenty of Blue Herons, Egrets and Osprey on the water – and an occasional Bald Eagle overhead. Refuel with a tasty fried chicken, potato salad, and fresh fruit picnic after the trip.

Upon arriving at the award-winning Distillery, thirsty paddlers join a Hooch Guru for a tongue tapping taste of five of the distillery’s cordials, such as Original Limoncello, Raspberry Limoncello, Cremma Lemma, Lemon Ice and Dark Chocolate Raspberry liquor, which are paired with sweet treats and “great storytelling.”

Following a guided tour of the farm, which is peppered with lemon trees and raspberry shrubs, it’s time to chill out in the shady picnic area listening to live music. For $4, you can purchase refreshing ice tea, lemonade or – childhood favorite – a Slushie, which can be spiked with each guest’s favorite handcrafted hooch.

A refreshing, summery SweetShine cocktail!

  1. In a mixing glass muddle 5 mint leaves with 4 fresh honeydew balls. Add Ginger SweetShine and rum. Add ice, cover, and shake vigorously until ice cold. Fill glass with frozen honeydew balls and strain chilled mixture into glass. Top with club soda. Garnish with mint sprig.
