Florida’s Craft Distilling: A Spirited Journey into Artisanal Excellence

Craft liquor distilling in Florida has experienced a remarkable surge in recent years, as artisanal spirits distilleries have emerged across the state. This flourishing industry has been fueled by the passage of House Bill 347, which granted micro spirits distillers the ability to sell and conduct tastings on their premises. These developments have not only boosted the growth of the craft distilling sector but have also transformed it into a captivating trend in Florida’s vibrant tourism scene. Let us embark on a spirited journey through Florida’s craft distilling landscape, where local ingredients, terroir, and unique experiences converge.

Artisanal Excellence Blossoms in the Sunshine State

Florida’s craft distillers have embraced the art of small-batch production, dedicating themselves to creating exceptional spirits that reflect the essence of the Sunshine State. One notable example is the Florida Cane Vodka, produced in Tampa, which showcases a variety of flavors made with natural fruit sourced from nearby locales. By utilizing local ingredients like sugar cane, craft distillers are able to create distinctive spirits that captivate the senses and embody the spirit of Florida.

House Bill 347: Catalyzing Craft Distilling Growth

The passing of House Bill 347 was a pivotal moment for Florida’s craft distilling industry. This legislation not only provided a significant boost to the sector but also opened up new avenues for engagement between distillers and consumers. Micro spirits distillers can now sell two bottles per year to each customer on-site, allowing for a more direct and personal connection with their clientele. Moreover, the bill has enabled the establishment of on-site tasting rooms, gift shops, and craft spirits tours, offering visitors a chance to witness the art of distillation firsthand and deepen their appreciation for the craftsmanship behind each bottle.

Florida’s Unique Terroir: Influencing the Spirit

Florida's Unique Terroir: Influencing the Spirit

The character of Florida’s craft spirits is deeply influenced by the state’s unique terroir. The diverse geographical elements, such as the presence of great corn and abundant sugar cane, contribute to the distinctive flavors found in these spirits. Craft distillers skillfully harness these local resources, allowing the natural essence of Florida’s land to shine through in their creations. By drawing inspiration from their surroundings, distillers are able to produce spirits that capture the true essence of the state, offering a taste of Florida’s terroir in every sip.

Craft Distilling Tourism: A Spirited Vacation Experience

Florida’s craft distilling industry has become a major attraction for tourists, offering an unforgettable and educational vacation experience. One notable destination is the St. Augustine Distillery, located in a century-old ice plant, which attracts over 5,000 visitors per month. The distillery seamlessly blends its agricultural origins with modern distilling equipment, providing guests with a unique neo-vintage experience. Visitors can immerse themselves in the art of distillation, witness the production process firsthand, and even enjoy tastings of the distillery’s exquisite spirits. This fusion of history, craftsmanship, and hospitality has transformed Florida’s craft distilling industry into a vibrant tourism trend, enticing travelers from around the world to explore and savor the flavors of the Sunshine State.

Conclusion

Florida’s craft distilling scene has emerged as a force to be reckoned with, drawing attention from enthusiasts and tourists alike. With the passage of House Bill 347, the industry has flourished, providing micro spirits distillers with opportunities for on-site tastings, direct sales, and the creation of immersive experiences for visitors. From the sun-kissed sugar cane fields to the vibrant flavors of handcrafted spirits, Florida’s craft distilling industry offers a unique fusion of local ingredients, terroir, and a taste of the Sunshine State’s rich heritage. So raise a glass and embark on a spirited journey through the heart of Florida’s artisanal excellence.

BLOOMERY MAKES HISTORY!

And we want YOU to join us!

www.startengine.com/startup/bloomery

You can own a part of the Distillery and help SweetShine go national! We can now do this with your help, through grassroots Regulation Crowdfunding! We were first in the nation (by 4 minutes!) to file through the SEC at 6:35 am!

After four long years of waiting for Title III of the JOBS (Jumpstart Our Business Startups) Act to come to fruition, today, May 16, 2016, is the date that this unprecedented opportunity for American small businesses to raise growth capital by using grassroots efforts finally comes into effect.

Bloomery has been preparing for quite some time to be ready to launch an offering on this historic day as one of the inaugural companies in the country. Now you can be part of this historic event too-by becoming an investor in the Distillery.

Today, Bloomery is only one of a handful of small American companies taking crowdfunding to a whole new level as a result of Title III of the JOBS Act. Title III essentially allows crowdfunding participants – investors – the ability to purchase actual ownership in a company rather than simply donating money to a company via a rewards-based program like Kickstarter. With Title III of the JOBS Act comes the latest in equity crowdfunding laws permitting non-accredited individuals to invest in small businesses like ours. Investing was previously restricted to wealthier accredited investors and institutions only. Now friends, family and fans here, there, and everywhere can actually invest in the Distillery’s future and the growth of the company.

Our dream is to be able to take SweetShine from a tiny log cabin in the woods where the Blue Ridge Mountains meet the Shenandoah River in West Virginia and bring it to every state in America. But we need YOU to help us on this journey. We ask for your support and grassroots effort, once again, to take Bloomery SweetShine to the next level. Help us to #ConnectYourSpirit to ours. As friends, family and fans, you’ve already been such a huge part of our success…why not jump into the journey with us?

For more information about our company, our offering, and to make an investment, please visit www.startengine.com/startup/bloomery.

Cheers!
Linda, Tom, Rob and the whole cast of characters who make up this crazy, fun-filled Distillery

PS  The success of this grassroots crowdfunding depends on you. Aside from being an investor yourself the best way to help us reach our goal is for you to share the excitement with your circle regardless of where in the United States they live. Through THE mINd oF a mAd MaN

By: Eric Bell. Photo by Eric Fargo.

This will be a bi-weekly or so posting where I will publish a recipe, either for a cocktail or for food incorporating SweetShine® in some way. My mind works in weird ways when coming up with some of these! Have fun following along with the journey “Through THE mINd oF a mAd MaN!” Please feel free to submit your recipes to me for inclusion at [email protected].

Setting: Close to midnight, sitting by the fire with a cup of coffee, watching Pawn Stars on TV.
My phone goes off with an incoming text message. “Who the hell is texting me this late?” It’s the Dragon Lady! (Our endearing term for Linda, the owner) “Great, what does she want this late at night?” (She is at a conference out of town.)

Dragon Lady: “Quick, What is a Conjugal Seizure? I need it now.” Me: “What are you talking about?” Dragon Lady: “A cocktail recipe.”

Me: madly Googling to find what she is talking about with no results.

Me: “I can’t find it.” Dragon Lady: “I know–Make it up!”

Phone rings, the Dragon Lady is calling…ugh… Me: “Who is your audience?”

Dragon Lady: “middle aged guy who doesn’t drink, make it good! Sweet and sassy, and one that will sneak up on ya.” Me: “Ok, Bye” Hang Up!

Me: mind going crazy, need a cocktail that packs a punch but doesn’t taste like it does…

Text Message…Me:

  • A Conjugal Seizure
    • 2 parts cognac
    • 1 part Peach SweetShine®
    • 1 part Raspberry Lemon SweetShine®
    • squeeze of an orange wedge
    • toss it in the glass and garnish with a cherry
    • splash with club soda if he’s a wuss

    Dragon Lady: “Ok, wow…”
10 minutes pass… Text Message… Dragon Lady: “OMG that was awesome and he LOVES it!” Me: “Good.” Dragon Lady: “How did you come up with that?” Me: “Don’t underestimate my abilities!” Dragon Lady: “I don’t, that’s why I hired you!” Dragon Lady :”☺”

End of conversation. Until the following week when she asked me to make a Sassy Slap…

Paddle to the SweetShine Hooch

with River and Trail Outfitters

call 301-695-5177

River & Trail Outfitters has teamed up with Bloomery Plantation Distillery, crafting a fun, festive and flavorful day where participants paddle the mellow, wilderness-surrounded Shenandoah River and then tour our distillery and taste a variety of our farm-fresh cocktail liqueurs.

The splash and spirit day kicks off with a guided 3-to-7-mile mellow kayak or canoe tour – depending on water levels – down the winding tree-lined Shenandoah River. Nestled in lush wilderness of the picturesque Shenandoah Valley, the river is encircled by the sprawling Blue Ridge Mountains. Deer, otters and beaver are often spotted along and beyond the shoreline, while there are plenty of Blue Herons, Egrets and Osprey on the water – and an occasional Bald Eagle overhead. Refuel with a tasty fried chicken, potato salad, and fresh fruit picnic after the trip.

Upon arriving at the award-winning Distillery, thirsty paddlers join a Hooch Guru for a tongue tapping taste of five of the distillery’s cordials, such as Original Limoncello, Raspberry Limoncello, Cremma Lemma, Lemon Ice and Dark Chocolate Raspberry liquor, which are paired with sweet treats and “great storytelling.”

Following a guided tour of the farm, which is peppered with lemon trees and raspberry shrubs, it’s time to chill out in the shady picnic area listening to live music. For $4, you can purchase refreshing ice tea, lemonade or – childhood favorite – a Slushie, which can be spiked with each guest’s favorite handcrafted hooch.

Hello CELLO Fans!

Are you a little amazed at our new look? We’re hoping you’re as excited as we are about it! Our CELLO label worked so well at the Distillery, we loved the look, but as we’re moving toward a national presence, we’ve found that our CELLO label wasn’t as effective as it could be on the liquor store shelves. So for the past few months, we’ve been working diligently on rebranding our product.

So without further adieu, drum roll please, here it is: Bloomery SweetShine!

As you know, we pretty much put four ingredients into our SweetShine. Our 190° proof neutral based spirit, sugar, water and a fruit, root or nut for the flavor. Just like the Old Timers did during Prohibition.

Did you know: In 1800, there were more than 14,000 distillers in America, some of them producing only a barrel a year. By 1909, their numbers had been reduced to about 600. Then Prohibition hit in 1920. After its end in 1933, a dozen or fewer distilleries were left standing. Of course, those were the official statistics, which don’t include the citizenry’s rich and colorful history of making moonshine. And in our tiny hamlet of Bloomery, WV more illegal ‘shine came through this area than in any other area of the state! We’re excited to embrace those roots.

So CELLO fans, you’ll be happy to know that our new playful vintage look, through a collaboration with internationally award-winning artist Marty Blake, is out and will be available to our loyal CELLO fans at an unveiling at the Distillery on Saturday, May 11. We hope you’ll join us.

Let us know what you think—
Cheers!
