The Man in the Green Hat

George Cassiday was a WWI veteran who came home with an injury that prevented him from returning to his job at the railroad. So, what’s an underemployed fella going to do to earn money in the 1920’s? Bootleg, of course!

Ol’ George began smuggling hooch by train from New York to Washington, D.C., 2 large suitcases full at a time, to supply all of Congress with their illegal libations. Yep! You read that right. Members of the House and Senate alike, including those who voted dry, kept George in business whenever Congress was in session. They even set up a basement office as a supply room for his operation.

After a couple years the Capitol Police finally caught on and arrested George for possession of illegal alcohol. The arresting officer’s description of George to the media included his light green felt hat, and the infamous moniker, “The Man in the Green Hat”, was born. George was banned from the House premises, but that didn’t stop him. If anything his new found fame increased business, and he simply moved his bootlegging business to the other side of the capitol building.

Now that you’ve had your history lesson, let’s jump straight to the hooch. Here’s what you need to make The Man in the Green Hat:

img_6059-300x200-1

1 1/2 oz gin

1 1/2 oz Cré

2 dashes mint bitters

lemon twist

This drink is going to be served “up”, meaning it will be served cold without ice, so the glassware must be properly chilled. Simply fill a cocktail glass with ice water and let it sit while you mix the drink.

img_6060-300x200-1

In a separate mixing glass pour 1 1/2 oz gin. We prefer a nice London Dry gin for this particular cocktail, but any gin will work just fine.

img_6063-300x200-1

Add 1 1/2 oz Cré.

img_6065-300x200-1

Finish with 2 dashes mint bitters. Don’t use too much! A little bitters goes a long way.

img_6066-300x200-1

Add ice.

img_6070-300x200-1

Do not listen to James Bond. Always stir your martinis! Shaking them adds air and chips of ice making the drink cloudy or “bruised”. Stirring with ice chills the drink while maintaining the clarity of the liquid.

img_6073-300x200-1

Once the mixture is ice cold, discard the ice water that is chilling your glassware and immediately strain the drink into the glass.

img_6075-300x200-1

Twist a little lemon peel over the surface of the drink. This brightens the flavor and gives a wonderful aroma.

img_6078-300x200-1

Set your twist on the rim for a fun garnish, and serve immediately while it’s nice and cold.

img_6086-300x200-1

In honor of our hooch hero, George Cassiday, we give you The Man in the Green Hat.

img_6079-300x200-1

Thanks for keeping the spirits flowing, George!

Cremma Lemma

Red, White, and Bubbly

Get ready for the 4th of July with some fizzy fun! We’re keeping this one nice and simple so you can just sip and relax this holiday weekend.

Here’s what you need:

untitled-2-300x225-2

1 tbsp strawberry puree

2 oz Cremma Lemma

3 oz champagne

(Really, though, you can use whatever ratios you like).

untitled-3-300x225-2

Don’t forget! The cream in Cremma Lemma rises to the top and forms an all-natural plug in the neck of the bottle, so if you’re trying to pour but nothing is coming out, just give it a good shake! And if a little piece of the plug pours out, eat it! It tastes like boozy cheesecake. BONUS!

untitled-7-300x225-1

And now for the cocktail …

First, chill all ingredients and glassware.

untitled-6-300x225-1

Spoon 1 tbsp strawberry puree into the bottom of a chilled martini glass.

untitled-13-300x225-2

Sit the spoon on top of the puree, then gently pour Cremma Lemma into the bowl of the spoon to layer.

untitled-9-300x225-2

Just like so.

untitled-20-300x225-2

Carefully top with chilled champagne.

untitled-22-300x225-2

Cut the bottom of a strawberry for garnish.

untitled-21-300x225-2

Beautiful.

untitled-25-300x225-2

Add a festive blue straw to complete the patriotic look.

Hard LemonadeStrawberryTea

Strawberry Palmer Mar-tea-ni

We’re finishing Strawberry Month with another 1-2-3 cocktail. That’s right, only 3 ingredients in today’s masterpiece.

strawberrypalmer-17-300x200-1

This is all you need:

strawberrypalmer-21-300x200-1

2 oz Hard Lemonade SweetShine

2 oz sweet tea vodka

4 strawberries

strawberrypalmer-31-300x200-1

Start with slicing your strawberries.

strawberrypalmer-41-300x200-1

Strawberries and Hard Lemonade are a match made in (almost) Heaven!

strawberrypalmer-51-300x200-1

Quarter the berries and put them in a mixing glass, mason jar, anything with a lid.

strawberrypalmer-16-300x200-1

Add a little magic – 2 oz Hard Lemonade SweetShine

strawberrypalmer-9-300x200-1

Muddle. If you don’t have a fancy gadget like this just use any blunt object like the back of a wooden spoon.

strawberrypalmer-7-300x200-1

Now add 2 oz sweet tea vodka.

strawberrypalmer-8-300x200-1

Can’t find such a thing? Substitute regular vodka + sweet tea. Easy.

strawberrypalmer-10-300x200-1

Now add ice.

strawberrypalmer-11-300x200-1

Cover and shake until ice cold.

strawberrypalmer-12-300x200-1

The ice will dilute the drink a bit, which is what we want for this particular cocktail.

strawberrypalmer-13-300x200-1

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, or over ice if you prefer.

strawberrypalmer-14-300x200-1

Garnish with a strawberry.
